Food for thought on Postpartum

The postpartum period is a vulnerable and volatile time in a woman’s life. But postpartum isn’t just the first 6-8 weeks or the fourth trimester - it’s the rest of your life. You don’t go back to the woman you once were - you rise into someone new. Having a birth plan and support is important but having a postpartum plan and support is equally important too.

You have no idea what awaits you on the other side and you cannot control what happens to you, but you can have the resources ready to increase your odds of having a positive postpartum experience, and set the tone for your new life as a mother.

Imagine this: you are freshly postpartum, you are physically and mentally exhausted, your hormones are all over the place, and you have a new little human being to care for, as well as perhaps older siblings. You’re overwhelmed, you don’t know where to start, you’re hungry, you’re tired and you wish you had someone to guide you through this incredibly important transition.

Now, imagine this: you are freshly postpartum and you’re experiencing all of the above, BUT you have a postpartum plan in place with a doula to guide you every step of the way. I am the experienced mother/sister/cousin/friend you wish lived next door.

How nice would it be for someone to care for you too? This is mothering the mother. This is Mothering With Grace. Showing grace to ourselves as mothers during the most vulnerable and volatile time in our life. Pregnancy and birth are hard work, but the journey has just begun and it does not have to be done alone.

Individually Curated Postpartum Packages

We can work together to curate a postpartum package that meets your unique needs, but this would typically include a combination of the following:

  • Preparing simple, freshly cooked, warm, nutritious and delicious food for you and your family.

  • Showing you basic infant care.

  • Providing information and support on breastfeeding.

  • Listening to any questions and/or concerns regarding you and/or your baby, and providing you trusteed referrals.

  • Helping you process your birth story.

  • Supporting older children with this new experience.

  • Providing you time for self-care, such as holding your baby whilst you shower.

  • Performing light household tasks, such as baby’s laundry

A postpartum doula can be particularly helpful if you had a cesarean birth, any birth complications, when there are siblings around, your partner works long hours/travels for work or you are new in town and don’t have a support network yet.
